Framing: (copied from the Canvas website)”This theory
concerns how news and information are “framed” or presented once through the
news “gate” and on the public agenda. A media “frame” is the central organizing
idea for a news story that supplies a context and emphasizes certain aspects of
a story while minimizing or ignoring others.
In this film the
government is framed as the bad guy who has the power to ruin the lives of
anyone who tries to stand in its way. The film also does a good job of framing
Joe and Valerie as the victims. In one of the scenes the Press Secretary is briefing
the press after Valerie’s named had been leaked. In the scene it frames the
Press Secretary as a rambling stuttering idiot, who can’t answer the press’
questions clearly. This is a great example of the film trying to frame the bush
administration as the bad guys who have no honest answers to the questions
about the war or Valerie.
Themes: After watching
the film several times we came to the conclusion that the main theme of the
movie was to strive for the truth even in the face of hostility ranging from
peers and public opinion and a hostile, uninformed and biased press, to the
most extreme embodiment of opposition, the White House itself.
